In 2016 we were asked to provide design guidance for residents who were keen to add mansard roof extensions to properties in the Driffield Road and Medway Conservation Areas. The council appointed us to update the character area appraisal, assess the impact of roof extensions on the character of the streetscape and illustrate a model exemplar for design guidance. The majority of residents supported a change of policy in favour of permitting roof extensions following the design guidance.
In order to mitigate a perceived harm to the character of the area in the short to medium term, we were re-appointed in 2017 to propose potential measures for mitigation. We provided design guidance for replacement of lost architectural features such as stucco cornices and cast iron railings. We also suggested improvements to the public domain for review at public consultation.
